The term “day” ( يوم ) in the singular form occurs 365 times in the Quran, which equals the number of days in a single solar year. The plural forms “days” and “two days” occurs 30 times which is the average length of a solar month. While all forms occur 475 times (19×25) in the Quran, which corresponds with the 19-based mathematical structure of the Quran.

Day (يوم)

Days (ايام / يومين)

Sabbath

While the Sabbath is not obligatory upon the followers of the Quran, it was a commandment for the upholders of the Torah. The Sabbath was to be upheld on the seventh day of the week, and interestingly, this word occurs in the Quran precisely seven times as well.

Sana & ʿām

The Quran uses two different words for year: “ sanah ” ( سنة ) and “ʿām” ( عام ). This shows that there are two different systems for determining the year according to the Quran. The difference between these two terms is that “ sanah ” ( سنة ) is in reference to the solar year, while “ʿām” ( عام ) is in reference to the lunar year.

This is best depicted in the following verse regarding the length of time the sleepers of the cave spent in the cave, stating that they stayed in the cave for 300 solar years; increased by nine.

18:25 They stayed in their cave three hundred years, increased by nine.

(٢٥) وَلَبِثُوا۟ فِى كَهْفِهِمْ ثَلَـٰثَ مِا۟ئَةٍ سِنِينَ وَٱزْدَادُوا۟ تِسْعًا

It just happens that 300 solar years is equivalent to 309 lunar years. This gives us two systems for calculating the time period in both solar and lunar, and it just happens that the word “ʿām” ( عَام ) in its various forms occurs exactly nine times in the Quran.

Metonic Cycle

Interestingly, the word for a solar year is “sanah” ( سنة ). In all its forms, it occurs 19 times. This corresponds with the Metonic cycle, a period of almost exactly 19 solar years, after which the sun, moon, and earth come back to their exact same alignment, and the lunar phases recur at the same time of the year.

Additionally, if we look at every time that the words sun and moon occur in the same verse, we find this occurs exactly 19 times.

If we look at the 19th occurrence where the words sun and moon occur in the same verse, we read:

75:9 And the sun and the moon crash into one another.

(٩) وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ

Month in Quran

Another sign of God’s system represented in the Quran is that the word month in the singular form occurs 12 times.

As mentioned above at the start of this article, the word “day” in the singular form occurs 365 times in the Quran. If we look at how many times this word is mentioned between the first mention of “month” in the singular form in 2:185 to the last occurrence in 97:3, we see that the word “day” in the singular form occurs 354 times within this range. 354 is the number of days in a lunar year.
